The Lowell Mason Foundation, Inc. in cooperation with the Medfield School Department is pleased to announce the dedication ceremony of The Lowell Mason Auditorium which took place on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at 7 pm at Amos Clark Kingsbury High School, Medfield, MA.
Guest speakers included Dr. William McManus, retired Associate Professor and Chair of Music Education at Boston University; Dr. Richard Colwell, professor Emeritus of Music Education at the University of Illinois; and Mr. Caleb Mason, great, great, great grandson of Lowell Mason.
Guest performers included the Boston Latin School Orchestra under the direction of Paul Pitts; the Boston Latin School Chorus under the direction of Ryan Snyder and the Medfield High School Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Douglas Olsen. The Medfield High School Jazz Ensemble recently won first place in the 2011 Charles Mingus High School Competition and Festival held at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City.
The high school auditorium will be renamed to honor Lowell Mason, considered the Father of Music Education in America’s public schools. Mason was born in Medfield in 1792. His birthplace, recently saved from demolition, will be moved to 59 Green Street in Medfield on April 19th where it will undergo restoration.
